Alfred Day

Alfred F. Day, 76, of New Castle, Va., made the journey to his heavenly home on Friday, October 18, 2013, from Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, N.C. He was born on October 20, 1936, to Samuel Walter Day and Elizabeth Alice Meadows Day, in Surveyor, W. Va. Al served in the United States Army during the Cuban Missile Crisis and retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad. Affectionately called, "Honey," he was known for his enduring faith in God, devotion to family, helpful nature, warm smile, strong handshakes and bear hugs. Honey dearly loved his family, especially his granddaughter, Morgan, who is her Poppy's "pride and joy." From hunting and hiking for more than 50 years in the beautiful mountains of Craig County to gardening, boating and fishing, Al thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors. His yearly trips to the Outer Banks, where he spent time fishing and playing corn hole with his "Ocean Waves Campground" buddies, was the highlight of each Spring and Fall. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Perry Day and Elbert Asbury, and his sister, Lenora Gentry. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley Slaydon Day; daughters, Elizabeth Ann Day of Roanoke and Jeanette Day Warwick and her husband, Curtis Warwick, his only son, of Elliston; granddaughter, Morgan Elizabeth Warwick of Blacksburg; brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Edith Day, of Roanoke; sister and brother-in-law, Gracie and Adalee Bailey, of Roanoke; and sister-in-law, Carolyn Day of Roanoke; and, many loving nieces and nephews. PawPaw will also be greatly missed by his numerous grand-dogs, grand-cats and his great-grand-dog, Piper. To celebrate Al's life, a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22, at Paitsel Funeral Home, 286 Main Street in New Castle, with Pastor Mike Bowman officiating. Interment with military rights performed by the DAV will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. The family will receive friends at Paitsel funeral home Monday from 2 to 7 p.m. The family is grateful to the staff of Albemarle County Hospital and the Ocean Waves family for the outstanding care and compassion shown to Al and Shirley.
