STEVEN ALLEN CARPER SR

Steven Allen Carper Sr. (Wally), 85, passed away on May 18, 2026, surrounded by his 3 children. Born on July 3, 1940, he was the son of the late Roy and Bea Carper and was raised on Meadow Creek in Craig County, Virginia — a place that always remained close to his heart. Steve was well known for his love of bluegrass music and his remarkable talent as a fiddle player. Over the years, he won several ribbons for his music and proudly earned 1st Place at the Virginia Folk Music Association in 1984 for his fiddle playing. Whether playing music with friends or simply enjoying the mountain air, Steve found joy in the simple things in life. He loved riding his four-wheeler to “Penny’s Holler,” enjoying Little Debbie oatmeal cakes, collecting old Volkswagen cars, and spending time driving his mustangs. His stories, laughter, and unmistakable personality will be remembered by all who knew him. In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his loving wife, Edith Carper; his son, Steven Carper Jr.; his grandson, Jesse Carper; and his sister, Marta Bostic. Left to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy are his children, Melissa (Timmy) Wrenn, Bob (Michelle) Carper, and Carolyn (Joseph) Harless, daughter in law Donna Carper; his grandchildren, Zach (Karisa), Josie (Matt), Brandon (Lani), and Hannah (Gage); six great-grandchildren whom he loved very much; his sister, Janie Akers; and special friends Larry Waldron and Victor Dowdy. Steve's love for music, family, and the mountains of Virginia will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Good Samaritan Hospice for the compassionate care shown to Steve and his loved ones. A heartfelt thank you is also extended to Krista, Betty, Brittany, and Chasity for their kindness, support, and care during this time. The family would also like to recognize and thank Steve's caretakers over the past year for the friendship, compassion, and care they provided, which brought comfort and meant so much to him and his family. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, May 22, 2026, at Paitsel Funeral Home with Pastor Lee Looney officiating. Interment will follow at Huffman Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Paitsel Funeral Home.
