OBITUARY FOR BETTY MAE BITTINGER MOLER Betty Mae Bittinger Moler passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at her home on Little Mountain Road in New Castle. Born on April 6, 1935, to Elizabeth Rose Cales Bittinger and Hershel Lee Bittinger, Betty was raised on Greenbrier Mountain at White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. She met and married Willard Scott Engle Moler in 1954 and the couple made their new home on Meadow Creek in Craig County where Scott was employed at the national fish hatchery. His career in hatchery management had them relocate to Paint Bank and Wytheville, but they eventually returned to New Castle where he retired. They were just short of celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary when "Pawpaw" passed away in May 2014. Betty and Scott raised four children and enjoyed their many grandchildren and great grandchildren on their farm in "Moccasin Hollow". Betty was known in the community as possessing a very generous spirit, a quick smile, a genuine laugh, and a willingness to share her table and her home. She was an excellent cook, a gracious hostess, a tireless gardener, and a creative decorator. She especially enjoyed collecting antiques and displaying them in unique ways in her home. Above all, she was a dedicated wife and mother and deeply loved her family. Betty is survived by her four children: Barbara Scott Moler Shearer (David Mark Shearer) of Salem, Virginia; Robert Engle Moler (Cecil Oscar Martin) of High Point, North Carolina; Frederick Calvin Moler (Amy Suzanne Givens Moler) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and Mary Elizabeth Moler Starnes (Brett Alden Starnes) of Jefferson City, Tennessee. She was known as "Mawmaw" to her ten grandchildren, Daniel Lee Bromley Shearer of Salem, Virginia; Wade Allen Shearer of Nutter Fort, West Virginia; Amanda Paige Moler Tornstrom, Olivia Leigh Moler McRay, and Robert Benjamin Moler of Danville, Kentucky; Cody Scott Moler, Eli Givens Moler, and Noah Frederick Moler of New Castle, Virginia; Elizabeth Noelle Starnes and Brett Enoch Starnes of Knoxville, Tennessee. Betty also loved her six great grandchildren, Wesley David Tornstrom, Annie Jo Tornstrom and Henderson Blake McRay of Danville, Kentucky; Remington Brooks Perry of Perryville, Kentucky; Collier Landrum Moler of Burgin, Kentucky; and Julia Rose Pires of Knoxville, Tennessee. Betty is survived by one sister, Wanita Rose Bittinger Caldwell (Russell Lane Caldwell) of New Castle. She was a member of Chestnut Grove Church for many years and later in life attended New Castle United Methodist Church with her dear friend, Janie Carper Akers of New Castle.
